A Boca Raton contractor was just arrested again, this time for taking money on home improvement jobs and never finishing the work. Not his first arrest. Not his first set of homeowners left with a half-torn-out kitchen and a check that already cleared.

Check the license. Not the truck.

Anybody can put a logo on a truck. A real general contractor has a license number, and that number is public record. In Florida, you can look it up yourself on the DBPR website in about thirty seconds. If a contractor won't give you their license number, or the number doesn't check out, that's the whole conversation right there.

Ours is CGC 1537778. We put it on our trucks, our estimates, and our website because we've got nothing to hide and no reason to make you dig for it.

A real quote is a number, not a guess.

If the price changes every time you talk to them, or the first number was suspiciously low, pay attention. We've been doing this since 2002. We tell you what the job costs before we start, and that's what you pay. No surprise change orders halfway through demo, no disappearing subcontractors, no "it'll cost more once we open the wall" unless we actually find something and we show you why.

Ask who's actually running the job.

A lot of contracting in South Florida gets passed down two or three layers before anyone with real experience touches your house. On our jobs, Steve is personally involved from the estimate through the final walkthrough. You're not handed off to a stranger once the deposit clears.

Read the reviews, but read them right.

Anyone can get a handful of five-star reviews from friends and family. Look for reviews that mention specifics: on-time completion, clear communication, accurate pricing. Those are the details that are hard to fake.

The bottom line

The contractor in that arrest story wasn't unlicensed and invisible. He had jobs, clients, and a track record, and people still got burned. That's the part that should worry you. It means doing your homework matters more than it feels like it should.
